SCMC has numerous applications in the ceramic industry. The adhesive, film-forming, binding and thickening characteristics of CMC are utilized. It is used

Used as sizing agent of cotton, silk, wool, chemical fiber and blending textile. Warp sizing is the most important textile application for CMC. Its good water solubility, excellent film-forming characteristics and stable solution viscosity make it an efficient sizing agent. Furthermore, modern jet looms have made yarn strength even more crucial and this has contributed to continuous use of CMC in textile sizing. Normally, medium to low viscosity grades are used, depending on the dimensions of the yarn.
In sizing synthetic yarn blends (polyester and cotton), CMC is often used in combination with a synthetic sizing agent such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVC) to provide the desired degree of added size film adhesion.
Yarn dimension is of great importance when selecting the most suitable grade for use in sizing. As a rule of thumb, a lower viscosity CMC grade should be used for smaller yarn dimensions.
The use of CMC in powder detergents is one of the oldest and most well known applications of CMC. CMC functions as a soil suspending "anti-redeposit ion" agent in powder detergent formulas. This is achieved through electrostatic repulsion between the CMC deposit on the textile fibre and the negatively charged suspended soil. The discovery of the "anti-redeposition" properties of CMC in the mid-1930 overcame a major failing of synthetic detergents and has led to the worldwide use of CMC as an additive in household detergents.
In recent years, some new interesting detergent products have been launched on the market. From a CMC perspective, tablet detergents have opened up new opportunities. Special CMC grades can be employed as a tablet disintegrator and for tablet coatings. The development of detergents with specialized functions can be foreseen in the future. This type of development will force the development of new CMC grades with unique and specific characteristics. Used as smoothing agent and sizing agent in papermaking. CMC is also frequently used in surface sizing of paper and board. Due to its high binding power it improves the paper strength and its film forming properties regulate the porosity and increases the holdout. This is the reason why CMC is widely used in the production of cigarette papers, silicone based paper, and greaseproof papers and in board for curl control. Additionally, CMC controls the rheology of the size solution and imparts water retention.
SCMC has been widely used as a desentizing agent for lithographic plates. Its hydrophilic natures imparts desirable ink repellent properties to the treated areas of the plate, it has better adhesion, is more durable and necessitates less fountain water to desensitize the plate that does gum Arabic, which has been the standard gum in the industry. As a result lithographic plates lost longer, production can be increased and ink colours are brighter and sharper.
SCMC is used in hydrosols it can eliminate dilatancy, prevent settling edges and regulate penetration into porous surfaces.
SCMC is used in grouting cements to suspend mineral fillers and metallic powders, it acts as a set retardant for neat cements employed under conditions of high temperature and pressure by reducing the water loss. When used in conjunction with a wetting agent it is valuable in forming cellular cement for structural work.
The Germany foundry industry pioneered in the use of SCMC as a core binder. Its advantage over other binders are based on a combination of the following properties: low drying temperatures, good hot strength (over come tearing), low decomposition temperature (excellent knock out characteristics), low gas evolution, economy of use.
SCMC acts as a protective colloid to stabilize and control the viscosity of the pesticide emulsions after applications its adhesive properties function to hold the active ingredients without impairing their effectiveness.
It also finds use as a thickener for water and water chemical systems to produce sticky water for use in firefighting.
